Munro Bagging - Forbes of Kingennie

Try a spot of Munro-bagging

Never heard of Munro-bagging? Allow us to explain.

A Munro is any Scottish mountain taller than 3,000 feet (about a kilometre). There are around 280 Munros in Scotland – and since the late 1800s, keen climbers have made it their mission to scale each and every one.

That's Munro-bagging in a nutshell. Reach the summit and you've bagged that particular Munro. Bag every Munro and you'll earn yourself the coveted title of 'Munroist'.

Now, unless you're a Scot with a lot of time on your hands, you probably won't manage every Munro. But, as they say, it's better to have bagged and bailed than never to have bagged at all.

The good news is that you can get started right here in Angus. Our county is home to 10 Munros, including the beginner-friendly Mayar and Driesh. These twin peaks are often tackled together – and both offer soul-stirring views over the Angus Glens.

Now, a gentle word of warning. Munro-bagging is one of the most exhilarating outdoor activities in Angus – but it doesn't take kindly to fools who rush in. Know your own fitness level – and make sure you have the equipment and knowledge you need for a safe ascent.

Dundee Beaches - Forbes of Kingennie

Hit the beach

Angus is a coastal county. So, as you might expect, we have more than our fair share of beaches.

But you might not know that Angus is home to some of the finest, most pristine sands in all of Scotland.

Take Broughtry Ferry, for a start. This long, sandy stretch is just a stone's throw from Dundee – yet it's as clean and scenic as they come.

Then there's Lunan Bay. Framed by low cliffs and guarded by the ruins of Red Castle, it's a postcard maker's dream – and it's just as popular with families as it is with surfers and dog walkers.

We could go on. But you'll have more fun if you get out there and explore them yourself. (Try tapping 'East Haven' into your sat nav. Trust us.)

Fishing in Scotland - Forbes of Kingennie

Fish away a lazy day

Angus and fishing have a long history. Our coast is peppered with former fishing villages, which once echoed with the thrill and splash of the daily catch.

It's in our culture – and our cuisine. The famous Arbroath smokie, for instance, is still prepared today using a recipe that dates back to the late 1800s.

The fishing industry isn't quite the leviathan it once was. But as a hobby, fishing ranks among the most popular outdoor activities in Angus.

And it's easy to see why. With 35 miles of coast, nine major lochs and a web of rivers and tributaries, our county has more ways to angle than a precision protractor.

If you'd rather work up a sweat, fishing might not be your thing. But if you love spending time in nature and winning the waiting game, you should definitely add a spot of fishing to your list of must-try outdoor activities in Angus.

Practice your swing - Forbes of Kingennie

Practice your swing

Like fishing, golfing is one of the most popular and enduring outdoor activities in Angus – and it's just as deep-rooted in our culture.

See, the modern game of golf was invented in Scotland sometime in the Middle Ages. And to this day, our country hosts some of the world's most renowned and beloved courses.

You'll find a fair few right here in Angus, including the iconic Carnoustie Links and our very own USGA-spec Kingennie Golf Course.

Keen to polish your par? Get out there and play a few holes in the land where it all began. There's nothing quite like bagging a birdie while the full width of the Angus landscape unfurls before you.

If you're a complete beginner, that's fine too. Many courses offer lessons to help you learn the ropes and sharpen your swing. Before long, you'll be enjoying one of the most venerable outdoor activities in Angus with the rest of us.

Country Park - Forbes of Kingennie

Explore a country park

Not in the mood for mountains? Or beaches?

Not a problem. Just don some sturdy boots, head to your nearest country park and get ready for a ramble.

Angus has three country parks, each with a unique blend of woodland, parkland and water features. They're a great option if you want to experience our landscape without the pressure of catching fish, putting balls or bagging Munros.

But if you do fancy some structured fun, you can take part in one of the many outdoor activities in Angus country parks. Expect a wide variety of aquatic options, ranging from paddlesports to open-water swimming.

Caught the country bug? You'll be pleased to know that Cairngorms National Park is just 20 or so miles north of Dundee. As the largest National Park in the UK, it's bigger, wilder and more mountainous than our relatively low-key country parks. Happy exploring!
